Dr. Phy is the Director of Bands, Jazz Studies Coordinator at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) in Las Vegas. His position includes organizing the CSN Jazz Band, Jazz Combo’s, Jazz Theory, Improvisation, and Music Appreciation. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville, a Masters in Jazz Studies from The New England Conservatory of Music and a Doctorate in Jazz Studies from the University of Illinois. He studied and performed with Jamey Aebersold, Jim Pugh, Chip McNeil, John McNeil, and Bob Brookmeyer. Dr. Phy taught at the University of New Orleans and was a member of the legendary “Dukes of Dixieland” jazz band. Dr. Phy is at home in front of an audience whether it’s leading or performing. He has played music festivals in Arizona, Alabama, New Orleans, Las Vegas showrooms and nightclubs, The National Mob Museum in Las Vegas, The National World War II Museum in New Orleans, The Jazz Education Network conference. Dr. Phy has recorded and produced two studio albums, a jazz trombone quartet plus rhythm section, and a solo album featuring six originals. He has given jazz and trombone clinics at Colleges, High Schools, and Jazz Education conferences in Nevada, Utah, Alabama, Mississippi, New Orleans, and Texas. These include the Nevada Music Educators Conference, and Jazz Education Network (JEN) conferences. In 2016 he published an article based on his Doctoral thesis in the International Trombone Journal. He freelances around Las Vegas and performs regularly with his “Ramblers” band at the National Mob Museums’ Underground Speakeasy playing 1920’s prohibition era Jazz. He has performed with The 4 Tops, The Glen Miller Orchestra, The Temptations, Bonerama, Ingrid Jensen, Jennifer Wharton, Monica Mancini, Marvin Hamlisch, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim Pugh, Delfeyo Marsalis, The Maynard Ferguson Alumni Band, Joe DeFrancesco, Tom Garling, Rodger Ingram, Chip McNeil, Louis Belson, Lena Prima, Louis Prima Jr., Charo, and Ben Vereen. Dr. Phy plays on a Conn 10h jazz trombone with a Conn 6 ½ AL mouthpiece.
